DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position will require work at an environmental education center and other locations. The individual assists the Naturalist I in both programming processes as well as facility buildings, grounds and trails maintenance requirements. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Naturalist I or higher level supervisor. Does related work as needed.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Provides program and educational information to visitors;
Assists in program preparation and presentation for field trips, audiovisual presentations, written materials, exhibits, and demonstrations on ecology, natural resources, and environmental concerns;
Maintains exhibits and displays;
Prepares and distributes promotional materials;
Performs building, grounds and trail maintenance.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the natural sciences; good communication skills; ability to work with the public; mechanical aptitude and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and:
Twenty-four (24) credit hours of coursework from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, or
One year of full-time paid experience (or its part time or volunteer equivalent) in a position involving conservation, environmental education or other natural science work.
