ASSISTANT NATURALIST: 
This position will be avalable in May 2018.
Status: Full time temporary
This position will require work at an environmental education center and other locations.  The individual assists the Naturalist I in both programming processes as well as facility buildings, grounds and trails maintenance requirements. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Naturalist I or higher level supervisor.  Does related work as needed.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)
Provides program and educational information to visitors;
Assists in program preparation and presentation for field trips, audiovisual presentations, written materials, exhibits, and demonstrations on ecology, natural resources, and environmental concerns; Maintains exhibits and displays;
Prepares and distributes promotional materials; Performs building, grounds and trail maintenance.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the natural sciences; good communication skills; ability to work with the public; mechanical aptitude and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and:

Twenty-four (24) credit hours of coursework from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university; or

One year of full-time paid experience (or its part time or volunteer equivalent) in a position involving conservation, environmental education or other natural science work.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)
Conducts a broad range of environmental education programs for schools, special groups, and the general public; Prepares programs, field trips, audiovisual presentation, written materials, exhibits, and demonstrations on ecology, natural resources, and environmental concerns; Plans the acquisition and maintenance of materials and biological specimens used in programs and exhibits; Evaluates effectiveness of these programs and exhibits and makes modifications as needed; Maintains records of program attendance, cost, and evaluations; Trains other employees in environmental education methods; Plans and conducts workshops for teachers and other adults in outdoor/environmental teaching methods and concepts; Prepares daily record keeping and routine reports on all activities.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the natural sciences; good communication skills; ability to work with the public; mechanical aptitude and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelors degree in natural history, wildlife management, zoology, biology or related field; or

An Associates Degree in natural history, wildlife management, zoology, biology or related field and two years of environmental education experience; or

Any reasonable combination of experience as listed above.

Note:  this position requires a degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
